Senior Accountant (Distribution Industry)

About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established and growing organization in the distribution industry, is seeking a Senior Accountant to join their accounting team. This is a highly visible role that will partner closely with leadership and play a key part in the day-to-day accounting operations of a fast-paced distribution business. The ideal candidate will bring strong general ledger experience, a deep understanding of inventory-driven environments, and hands-on expertise with sales and use tax compliance, resale certificates, and distribution accounting processes.

This position offers the opportunity to work across multiple accounting functions, contribute to process improvements, and serve as a key resource in ensuring financial accuracy and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post month-end journal entries, maintain general ledger accuracy, and perform detailed account reconciliations.
  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Manage and coordinate sales and use tax filings across multiple jurisdictions and maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Review, track, and maintain customer resale certificates, ensuring proper documentation and audit readiness.
  • Analyze inventory transactions, cost movements, and related accounting activity within a distribution environment.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies involving inventory, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash transactions.
  • Support external audits and assist with the preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives designed to strengthen internal controls and streamline accounting operations.
  • Provide cross-functional support to AP, AR, and inventory accounting teams as needed.
  • Assist with special projects, system enhancements, and reporting requests from management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in a distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, or inventory-intensive environment.
  • Strong understanding of sales and use tax compliance and hands-on experience managing resale certificates.
  • Experience with inventory accounting, reconciliations, inventory adjustments, and transaction flow analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of general ledger accounting and month-end close procedures.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP functionality.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA designation or CPA-track candidate preferred.
  • Experience supporting multi-state sales tax compliance.
  • Background working within a high-volume distribution or supply chain organization.
  • Experience participating in ERP implementations, system upgrades, or accounting process improvement initiatives.
